John Sanders started his coffee career in the Little Italy section of Vancouver B.C. Canada. In 1989 he began as a Barista and a Service Technician. From there he quickly got involved in the field of Coffee Roasting. Over the last 33 years of his career he has become a Master Roaster and Green Bean Buyer as well as a Master Service Technician both for coffee brewing equipment and in the rebuilding of vintage, cast-iron coffee roasters. Hines currently own’s three Vintage coffee roasters, consisting of a 1966 Probat UG22 and a 1950 Probat UG12 and a 1900’s Perfekt 30KG. He is a current member of the (SCA) Specialty Coffee Association, Roasters Guild of America and was a voting member of the SCAA Technical Standards Committee. John was a founding member of the United States Barista Championship Committee and a past member of the Technical Standards Committee, in charge of the espresso standards for the USA and the WBC (World Barista Championships). He is
also the co- founder and past Chair of the Technical Standards Committee of the WBC. Mr. Sanders was a World Barista Certified Judge as well as an US Barista Certified Judge. He is a past licensed Q grader. He currently is a licensed AST (authorized specialty coffee trainer), for Barista, Brewing, Roasting, Green Coffee and Sensory. He currently holds two citizenships from the Countries of Canada and the United States of America.

1 US Barista Championships: Miami, FL 2001: Anaheim, CA 2002: Boston, MA 2003: Atlanta, GA 2004; Seattle 2005
2 World Barista Championships: Miami, FL 2001: Boston, MA 2003: Trieste, Italy 2004.
3 US Regional Barista Competitions 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005: Too many places to list!
4 Nordic Barista Cup 2005: Oslo, Norway
5 Hines’s Barista was the 2004 US Barista Champion and finished 13th in the 2004 World Championships in Trieste, Italy.
6 Cupping Judge: Costa Rica's 2004 Cosecha de Oro (crop of gold) cupping competition;
2004 & 2005 Best of Panama cupping competition.
7 Australasian Barista Championship; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2000
8 Russian Barista championships
9 Help start and create all of the African Barista Championships. With the first one in Kenya 2004.
10 Help start the barista championships in Mexico and Guatemala. Other professional experience:
9 Set a record of Auction Lot coffee along with The Roasterie (Kansas City, Mo.) when they bought Esmeralda Special (Panama) at $21 per pound. 2004
10 Responsible for establishing a protocol of testing espresso machines for a measurement of standards and performances for determining capabilities. 2005
11 Received an award from the SCAA for Special Recognition: Awarded to an individual who makes a special contribution of self to the SCAA.
